Since consultation and Women Empoweremnt Workshops held in 1997, HURIFO has stood with the suffering women, mothers of abducted children in the Acholi sub-region, on the position of blanket amnesty for their children and dialogue as the only best means to end the northern Uganda conflict.

Due increased access to land a woman is able to harvest a lot of cassava planted outside the camp. It is even safe for children to come along outside the camp (2005) This increased access to more means of livelihood is due to the peace efforts that have led to the military appoach being put on ice.

 

 

A historical photograph taken in about 1994-5 when Human Rights Focus just started. A number of these individuals came together to found HURIFO, to stand up and speak for the voiceless human rights victims particularly in the conflict affected northern Uganda. One placard reads: "NEGOTIATIONS AND NOT MILITARY CONFRONTATION ARE THE CHEAPEST AND MOST CIVILISED WAYS OF RESOLVING CONFLICT"

 

 

IDP leaders from Katakwi discuss with HURIFO staff issues pertaiing to their situation and return. Some camps have existed since 1979 due to the cattle rustling by neighbouring Karimojong tribe.

 

Two sisters, 13 and 19 years of age, raped by two government soldiers UPDF in the presence of their mother when the ventured out of the camp in search of livelihoods. The 13-year-old contracted HIV. With assistance from HURIFO they won a three-year-long civil suit case against the state and awarded Ush 50,000,000/= (USD $29,000) and Ush 32,000,000/= (USD $19,000):
